Abstract

SAŽETAK

Prirodne katastrofe utječu na ljudske živote, kako izravno tako i svojom dugotrajnošću na ekonomiju. S klimatskim promjenama za očekivati je da će se i učestalost katastrofa povećati, a što će značajno utjecati na ekonomske odluke. Jedan aspekt je rizik povezan s međusobno povezanom prirodom globalne proizvodnje i trgovina. Oslanjanje na strane inpute može dovesti do prekida proizvodnje kada zemlje izvora doživljavaju negativan šok. Poduzeća mogu odgovoriti na takav šok ponovnim razmatranjem ravnoteže između učinkovitosti i otpornosti u proizvodnji imajući na umu dugoročne promjene u strukturi globalnih lanaca vrijednosti kroz reshoring, nearshoring i diversifikaciju. Katastrofa, poput potresa u Japanu 2011, izazvala je neposrednu zabrinutost među proizvođačima automobila zbog prirode lanca opskrbe motornih vozila koji je visoko integriran i globalan, s većinom vozila koja imaju dijelove iz mnogih zemalja. Japan, kao druga najveća zemlja proizvođača automobila, glavna je sila u tom globalnom lancu opskrbe. Događaji u Japanu mogli bi potaknuti automobilsku industriju da preispita svoju dugogodišnju praksu prilagođavanja tržišnim uvjetima. Industrije bi trebale nastojati razvijati standarde i raznolike izvore za pojedine dijelove tako da u slučaju budućih globalnih prekida opskrbnog lanca postoje alternativni proizvođači za takve komponente.

Abstract (english)

Natural disasters affect people's lives, both directly and with their long-term impact on the economy. With climate change, it is to be expected that the frequency of disasters will increase, which will significantly affect economic decisions. One aspect is the risk associated with the interconnected nature of global production and trade. Reliance on foreign inputs can lead to production disruptions when source countries experience a negative shock. Companies can respond to such a shock by reconsidering the balance between efficiency and resilience in production, bearing in mind long-term changes in the structure of global value chains through reshoring, nearshoring and diversification. A disaster, like the 2011 Japan earthquake, raised immediate concerns among automakers because of the highly integrated and global nature of the motor vehicle supply chain, with most vehicles having parts from many countries. Japan, as the second largest car manufacturing country, is a major force in this global supply chain. Events in Japan could prompt the auto industry to rethink its long-standing practice of adapting to market conditions. Industries should strive to develop standards and diverse sources for individual parts so that in the event of future global supply chain disruptions there are alternative manufacturers for such components.
