The impact of COVID-19 crisis on manufacturing and hospitality industry in the Republic of Croatia and the European Union

Abstract

The crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic affects different sectors and companies differently. This depends on a number of factors, including the ability to adapt to disruptions in the supply chain, but also on inventories or production without inventories. Efforts have been underway in almost all countries for nearly two years to respond to the crisis and alleviate the need for medical supplies, as well as to ensure business continuity and employee safety. Such a crisis is unique in history and is characterized by unique factors such as rapid and global expansion, and unlike previous recessions and depressions, the main cause is not in the financial and economic system. Taking into account the global changes in the economy and the functioning of all industries, the aim of the work was to determine which industries were affected by the Covid-19 crisis and to what extent. Secondly, it aimed to identify the aspects of the crisis and the peculiarities of the Covid-19 crisis compared to the previous crises. The sub-objective also referred to the introduction of changes in the business activities of companies within each industry, i.e. their mutual comparison. The work has shown that the decrease in income had a strong to very strong impact on the care activities, hairdressing and beauty salons, but also on the accommodation and hospitality activities. On the other hand, the crisis did not have a strong impact on the income of manufacturing companies. The crisis had the least impact on the manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products, which recorded strong growth in income, profit and labor shortages.
