Abstract

Europe’s Green Deal directive has become a driver of change in the transition from fossil fuels
to renewable energy sources. This transition has been ongoing for over a decade now. However,
the noticeable climatic changes and never-seen social pressures have made this transition a
priority. However, the transition has been met with a lot of criticism for its costliness and too
ambitious goals. The question arises – is the green transition a realistic strategy or just a dream?
Previous research has often been optimistic about the green transition; however, when looked
at closer, a lot of the research has often quoted “advanced technologies” that have not come to
light yet. This was rarely represented as a limitation in studies; however, with the passing of
time, it is now obvious that these nonexistent technological advances are huge barriers to a
greener economy. By analyzing and dissecting previous research and drawing conclusions
from EU’s directives and action plans, the work provides a comprehensive look at how the
green energy transition is actually going and where it might go. Contrary to what is often
portrayed, the green transition is in a much earlier development phase. While certain European
Union member states have achieved a lot in their green transition, the European average is still
very low. On a positive note, there are more and more companies focusing on the green
transition, and more and more funding is becoming available for those who partake in the
renewable energy transition. Lastly, there are many barriers to the renewable energy transition,
but more and more countries are joining in on this massive change for a better future.
