Abstract

Demographers for years, but lately more and more dramatically warn of bad demographic picture of Croatia. According to the proportion of people aged 65 and over in the total population, Croatia is in the top ten demographically oldest countries in the world. Moreover, we belong to a group of only five countries in the EU that capture both the natural decrease (more deaths than births) and a negative balance of net migration (a larger number of emigrants than immigrants). Information in the media are different, but handled by the figure of over 70,000 young people in recent years left Croatia.
Comparing the basic demographic indicators with other European Union countries, Croatia in the period 2008 - 2015 has a negative population growth, negative net balance migration and the decline in the population. Moreover, belongs to a group of only five countries in the EU that in this period recorded the natural decline and a negative balance of migration Croatian population is reduced and the process of depopulation has caught many regional and local spatial units. Joint action of low fertility, distorted age structure and emigration of young people of childbearing age has led to the beginning of the process of extinction many areas of Croatia.
