Abstract

Micro enterprises, together with small-sized enterprises are most significant type of
enterprises. Around 50% of all employed workers in Croatia are working in micro and smallsized
enterprises. The survival rate in the period of 2002 till 2013 showed that micro and
small enterprises are most resistant to crisis and economic changes with 70.2% survival rate;
almost double of medium-sized and almost 20% better than large enterprises. Today’s
challenging and fast developing economy requires from enterprises to be equally prompt and
by comparing data, micro and small enterprises are at the top. Because of their size, they can
easily and fast adapt to newly developed situations and satisfy new needs exactly as economy
needs.
This all being said, micro and small-sized enterprises have disadvantages as well. As in
everything else, the human factor is key of development. Insufficient knowledge in various
fields cannot be covered by colleagues, and this can bring the shortage of financial resources,
shortage of strategic planning, under-usage of controlling tools, etc. This all can be potential
threat to future development of micro or small enterprise.
Considering everything previously mentioned, it is obvious that micro and small enterprises
are future of economic progress. Because people are more motivated as self-employed in
micro enterprises than in medium and large enterprises, the economy as a whole will have
benefits. Developed economies already recognized all the benefits of micro and small-sized
enterprises and slowly but surely are shifting their economies towards this sector. Jobs in
developing countries are shifting from large to micro and small-sized enterprises.
