Abstract
Following the years of reliable and continuous integration processes along with supranational cooperation, the European Union has been facing crisis after crisis in recent years. Lack of effective policies, growing inequality, and asymmetrical progress between member states led to troublesome low support from the public and caused strengthening of euro sceptics and nationalists parties in Europe. Furthermore, the balance between intergovernmentalism and supranationalism has shifted with disintegration possibilities in specific policies within the European Union. Schengen Area has been shaken by the refugee crisis and continues to deal with migration pressures while simultaneously dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic. Through analysis of core principles of integration, its dynamics, benchmarking as well as the evolution of convergence in the Economic and Monetary Union and creation of Eurozone, this paper aims to gain insight into the mechanism behind European Union’s functioning in order to understand better what led to numerous crisis, such as euro crisis, immigration crisis and Brexit, in recent history.
